Neuroplasticity and Brain Injury
Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to change its structure and function in response to injury, learning, or experience by forming new neural connections and reorganizing existing pathways.
After a brain injury such as TBI or stroke, neuroplasticity is the primary mechanism behind recovery. With consistent and targeted rehabilitation, the brain can regain lost functions or develop new ways to perform tasks. Research shows that brain reorganization and healing can continue for many years, in some cases up to 20 years after injury.
Advanced imaging tools such as MRI and fMRI have shown that recovery is not limited to the early stages after injury. Although age can influence the speed and extent of change, individuals of all ages can benefit from ongoing rehabilitation.
Neuroplasticity is a lifelong process that makes meaningful recovery possible long after injury. High Hopes Head Injury Program has been an excellent example of individuals recovering many abilities thought lost forever due to their injury, at any age, through consistent and targeted rehabilitation.
