Wheel of Change: Wheelchairs vs. Scooters After Brain Injury or Stroke
The right mobility equipment can affect more than movement. It can influence independence, confidence, and connection with the community. For someone recovering from a brain injury, stroke, or other neurological conditions, mobility equipment is rarely just a way to get from one place to another.
It can also shape how independently a person moves through the world and how easily they participate in everyday life.
A wheelchair may be the safest and most appropriate choice for many individuals.
However, for someone who has the hand control, reaction time, judgment, vision, and cognitive ability to operate one safely, a four wheel mobility scooter may offer greater independence and community access. Its upright, open design can also make social interaction feel more natural.
Scooters are worth considering for another practical reason: they can be less expensive than some powered wheelchairs while still providing effective mobility.

DRESS-UP DAY AT HIGH HOPES
Get your costumes ready. High Hopes is celebrating Dress Up Day on Thursday, October 29! Students, families, and
staff are invited to show off their creativity and join us for a fun and festive day. Come dressed as your favorite character, something spooky, something funny, or something completely original.
And yes, there will be costume awards, so bring your best look! Please keep all costumes safe, appropriate, and respectful of our High Hopes community. We look forward to seeing everyone dressed up and enjoying the celebration together.
The goal should not be to declare one device better than another. The goal is to help each person use the least restrictive mobility option that is safe and appropriate for their abilities. When someone can safely progress from a wheelchair to a scooter, that transition may represent more than a change in equipment. It can be another step toward independence, confidence, and fuller participation in the
community.
